Acrylic on Canvas 16” by 20”

The fertilize crescent, Mesopotamia, Sumer, Babylon, Assyrian, Iraq.

The cradle of civilization has gone by many names, and given the world so much without receiving the adulation and romanticizing that other early civilizations receive. Written language was invented there 5 millennia ago, as was algebra a few thousand years later. Modern pediatric medicine is not what it is today without the work of Iraqi physicians from a thousand years ago. Scientists in the 900s laid the foundation for modern automation and robotics. In recent times, there has been more focus on inventing ideas of weapons that don’t exist there, and on exploiting their natural resources, than there is on appreciating its rich history and sign I can’t contributions.

While Iraq has given this world many incredible gifts, none are more important to my family and I than the Al-Mariyati family. The intricate designs and vibrant colors of the Al Kadhimiya clock tower in Baghdad perfectly reflects the beauty of a family that I consider an extension of my own.

Family surname is front and center, and a family tree was worked into the design, with the first initial of each grandchild present in the flowers surrounding their parent’s name.
