"The roses of resistance are born in the asphalt. We receive roses, but we will be with our fists clenched speaking of our existence against the push and pull that affects our lives."
~ Marielle Franco
Marielle Franco was a revolutionary Brazilian politician, sociologist, and human rights activist. A black woman from the favelas, she spent her life advocating for and defending the most disenfranchised people of her country, until her death. She was assassinated on March 18th 2018, by two former policemen who were retaliating against her for speaking out against police corruption in Brazil.
One does not have to be Brazilian to appreciate the bravery of Ms Franco. Her legacy and impact is not isolated to the favelas, or the borders of Brazil. You can try and pull all the roses out of the ground, but others will always eventually grow back in their place.
