The third woman in Arizona history to be elected to the US congress. She served in the House of Representatives until she was shot in the head in an assassination attempt. 18 others were shot that day, with 6 losing their life at the hands of a Right Wing terrorist.
Resigning from her position due to the severe brain trauma she suffered that day, she has since dedicated her life as an advocate for gun control, primarily with the Giffords Org .
Part of a series of portraits highlighting women who have survived and endured extreme trauma, who then dedicated their lives to preventing such events from happening to others.
