Dr. Ameera Elasouli

Not all heroes wear capes, but I couldn’t help but paint one on this heroine.

Dr Ameera  Elasouli’s act of courage captured on camera is one of many moments over the last 5 months that has left me inspired and in awe of the strength of Palestinians, and left me questioning whether if in the same shoes I would be capable of even an ounce of their fortitude. Dr. Ameera’s example shines extraordinarily bright for a number of reasons. She did not have to be there. Not just running in the line of fire to help someone, not just at the hospital volunteering, but in Gaza in general. Dr. Ameera was in Egypt at the beginning of all of this, and immediately decided to return to Gaza to help others.

At a time where Western feminism has as a whole has turned the other cheek when it has come to the women of Gaza, the example of Dr. Ameera is even more poignant.

While Western feminism doesn’t feel like those women in Gaza meet the criteria of a woman worthy of their advocacy and support, Dr. Ameera exhibited more bravery and strength than all those that ignore her are capable of.
